Random spark snapping at coil. Help??? 200 1991

Hi guys. This one is weird. My wife noticed hard cracking sounds and it was an erratic spark coming out of from under the coil wire at the coil. Only happens when car is warmed up. Really makes the car miss. I replaced the coil and the wire and the problem persists. I thought that maybe a loose or broken ground wire at the base of the distributor might be the problem but there is no ground wire down there. Is there a ground wire inside the distributor under the cap? What else could cause this extra energy? Is it possible a bad plug or bad spark plug wire? Obviously I am hoping for an easy fix. This coil has two red and white wires on one side and two solid blue wires on the other. Please help?

It's not extra energy as much as a bad path to ground through the regular parts. Look for a very dirty coil, an abraded coil wire, a crusty distributor cap and rotor, and rusty or corroded wire ends up inside the rubber boots at the plugs.

Good luck with it, probably nothing a complete tuneup won't fix.

I would guess that you are due for new spark plug wires. One of them has a gap or just high resistance that makes the jump to the primary an easier path than the path to the spark plug.

Another possibility is that your spark plugs are REALLY shot, as in electrode burned way back.
