after odo gear replacement, odo no go! 200

Hi all,

A few weeks ago whe I reset my trip mileage meter, the odometer stopped working for a few miles. I pulled off the road and fiddled with the trip mileage button for a while and presto! it worked again. So after reading up on possible causes I thought it was the odometer gear. I figured for $29 it would basically ensure a lifetime of operation for the odometer, as the car has 147K now. And though it was working now, it had started going south earlier, and it could be any moment that this became a mandatory repair instead of an optional one!

So I followed the directions I found on the following site:
http://www.hyperocity.com/volvo240/volvoodometer.htm
And when I got everything disconnected and pulled the cluster, I heard something rattling inside. I got the board separated from the front cluster housing and then I saw an errant spring rolling around the bottom. I put it aside and knew that it went to something, but since it separated before I could see where it was, I don't know what purpose this spring serves. I noticed that the trip reset button had a lot of travel once I had the cluster apart, and wasn't sure that was normal. I continued the process and replaced the gear, and buttoned everything back up, sans spring. I went for a short drive to test the waters. Well, everything works, with the exception of the odometer and trip meter, of course. Does this spring somehow control the odometer assembly? Below are two URL of a couple photos I took. My camera is kind of on the outs, so I apologize for the bad quality. The first one is in this post, I don't know how to post multiple pics in one post.

I hope you guys can help me, as always your expertise and knowledge humbles me.
