Emergency brake 200 1993

My 1993 240 wagon is having emergency brake problems. It wasn't holding at all, and an adjustment did nothing. My mechanic said things weren't right under there, so he replaced the cables and put things back together correctly. He said it looked like someone had tried something and messed things up. But the brake still doesn't hold on a slope. My mechanic looked everything over. Shoes are only two years old - I found a receipt for that work in the glove box when I bought it last summer. Drums are fine. All cables and springs are functioning. I can move the car with the brake set on level ground, but it won't hold on a slope.

Any ideas and thanks a bunch.

Hey guys the parking brake cable is suspended by springs at the parking lever. No matter how tight you adjust them the springs will only allow so much tension. The problem will more than likly be in the hub inside the rotor. I saw where you said they were replaced only two years ago. So they should be in almost new condition unless you are one of these people that like to try and spin the car around in the middle of the road using the emergency brake. This I doubt. hehehe. Anyway, remove the rear rotor and have the inside of the emergency brake hub conditioned by using a type of disc grinder. I use a set of small disks that are made to condition the surface of the rotors. They are only made to ruff up the surface and not actually cut into the rotor itself. They can be purchased at most parts stores. They come in a package of three different grits (red, yellow and tan). They are not sandpaper but rather a stiff plactic disc about 2 inches in diameter with the compound impregnated into the plactic. Sorry, this is the best I can describe them. As you are using the brake for only stationary purposes then having it perfectly symetrical will not affect the working properties of the emergency brake. Especially since you are only scratching the surface of the hub..:>)..Max
P.S. not real sure but somewhere between 1989 and 1992 there was a design change in the emergency shoes so make sure you have the right ones. Please do not hold me to this statement as I am very old and my memory of such things seems to very from time to time.. Wait a second, what were we talking about? Oh yea ,, exhause pipes..Now in 1988 they went to a resinator type down pipe.. No wait, thats not right..Wiper motors,,thats it.. a green wire comes from the switch to.. oh never mind.. Huh? What?.. tap tap tap, is this thing working, can you hear me?

"My mechanic said things weren't right under there, so he replaced the cables and put things back together correctly. He said it looked like someone had tried something and messed things up".

Based on that info, I can't suggest much except to try for a second opinion from an experienced Volvo person, if possible.

With new cables, properly installed and adjusted, and working actuators at each wheel, the Parking Brake operation should be rock-solid.

My suspicions are aroused by a need to replace both cables on a '93. I have only had to replace a cable twice, and that's while maintaining several 240s over a 16-year period here in the Northeast.

you can or can't move it on level ground?

adjustment is from the 17mm bolt at the back of the lever under the cover.

the cables are adjusted from the small front bolts at the front of the lever assembly; this is a purely mechanical, independent system, so it either grabs or it doesn't.
