O2 sensor 79 non calif car...y/n 200

'79 242 DL A/C Auto trans P/S 120K. Do you think it should have an O2 sensor or not. It is a MI car here in Maine, and I had the exhaust done at a shop. Is a Lambda Sond badged car, which should indicate an O2 sensor presence. I don't see it and no wire leading to right before the cat. Just spent 2200 for a ton of work that I didn't have the time/garage to do myself (like I would have), but is running a bit rough now @idle only. Could be the cause, but a little cold up here to get down on the ground when the shop that replaced the Y-pipe could be lookin at it. Please let me know...

I hear what you are saying on the Lambda badge and I agree with it but my gut feeling is that it should not have the O2 sensor if it is not a Cali car. I have seen some odd stuff in the early B21 cars but the usual rule of thumb is that if it has no EGR then it will have an O2 sensor and vice versa. So does your old V have EGR or not? If it has no EGR then you should probably have an O2 sensor. Most if not all of the out of state 79 and earlier cars that I smogged had EGR and no O2 and I have seen cars as early as late '77 in Cali that were O2 sensor equiped. Volvo Cars N. America always preached that O2 sensors were not on their cars until '79 but I have seen otherwise on more than one occassion.

Yeah, here is an enigma. Surely a B21F, no egr or o2 sensor visible anywhere. With the sond badge...did my brick get abducted by aliens and mutated? I still get crappy gas mileage too...

Yeah strange stuff...although I do have to take a look, I don't remember any ugly EGR like there was on my BMW 3.0s. It should be that noticeable though for that year, right?

It should be fairly noticeable if you look for it. There should be a pipe in the back of the exhaust manifold, a valve with pipe under the intake manifold, a pipe going into the back side of the throttle valve and they usually had one of those large vacuum amplifiers with a bunch of vacuum lines going to/from it.

If it has an O2 sensor, it will be in the exhaust manifold -- not downstream in the header or cat. But my Bosch FI catalog doesn't show a 240 with O2 sensor till the 1980.

My recollection is like Mark's - EGR for federal and lambda for Cali '79s, but yes, the lambda would be in the exhaust manifold (where the EGR pipe would connect) and a frequency valve would be found under the intake manifold.

The grilles could have been swapped, hence the cute badge; the emissions sticker should verify how it was intended.
