OD question 200 1984

Brought home an 84 DL with no OD function. PO did not mention this, so they probably had been driving this way for a while.
Fuse #11 was blown, shifter console wiring looks ok, and the OD relay (orange) looks ok from the outside. So, I suspect that there is a problem with a short in the wiring to the OD solenoid.

If it's a simple short fix, what do I do about the solenoid which has been non-operational for a long time. A cautious person would pull the solenoid and clean it, follow with up with a powerflush and filter change.

But, I want to hear from the realists out there.

Thanks!

OD question 200 1984

On the auto tranny, the solendoid is on the left side. Wire to it can get overheated and maybe frayed. You have to get a good ways under there to see it all. That would be my first look-see. Second would be the o/d relay. Does the dash light work OK?

If a stick tranny, check the wires, and also the 4-th gear switch. Both on the right side.

Good Luck,

Bob

OD question 200 1984

An M46 with no OD function is very common. Hopefully, the OD Guru or someone else who knows more than I will respond. I do know that the problem is often the relay, even though it might look good from the outside. Often they need resoldering on the inside, or replacing. You can get them at junkyards for $2-$5, or new for maybe $40 aftermarket.

It could also be the fourth-gear switch on the side of the transmission which only allows engagement of OD when the transmission is in 4th.

Also, the wiring through the shifter very often gets broken due to all the bending and pinching it experiences. You can check this by pulling back the carpet under the passenger's feet, finding the two wires that come down from the shifter, uplugging the connector, and checking for continuity between the two wires when you press the shifter OD button. You should have continuity when you press the button. I rewired mine to a switch next to the cigarette lighter to avoid this problem again. It's not as fun as pressing a button on the shift knob, but I don't have to worry about the wires breaking again.

Good luck.
