Tips on replacing underhood wiring harness? 200 1987

I'm getting ready to replace the underhood wiring harness on my '87 240 with one of those improved, non crumbling jobs.

Any tips on this procedure would be really appreciated.

TIA,

Alf

The harness passesses thought the opening of the intake manifold, if I remember correctly, between # 2 and #3 runnners.

Use that point as your "middle" of the harness and disconnect each "end" and work it back p to that point.

What I mean is, the right half of the harness runs down under the engne and includes connectors for various temp, knock, water and oil sensors, plus goes over to the alternator.

Meanwhile, the "left" half of the harness passess through the firewall and connects to the brainbox in the passenger footwell.

therefore, pull each end toward the center like you are going to lift the darness right up out of the engine.

And I recall not needing to unbolt the intake manifold this way, but the suggestions to do so and complete other maintenance at this opportunity is a good idea.

Also, It's a good idea to have a second car nearby as a reference. Marking each connector on the old, then the new harness is a good approach, although the wire lengths and connector styles pretty much let you know what goes where.

I bleieve it doesn't matter which injector wire gets onto which injector. there may be differing wire lengths, which is to suggest which wires will "reach" to the front or rear positions.

Read Dave Shannon's pages.

The job will be easier if:

You decide to do a throttle body cleaning with the TB off the car.

You decide to put in the 1988-type PCV system. Means new oil separator, new hoses and a re-located flame trap. Benefit is 15 second flame trap service.
(My 1986 has old type low-level flame trap, my 1988 has hi-level, dunno when they changed.)

You decide to replace the intake manifold gasket. Harness goes in simpler with the manifold away from the block.

You decide to replace heater hoses - easier with intake manifold moved.

Look over the job and the extent of the harness. Does it have the wires that go to the alternator? If yes, consider replacing the three accessory bushings on the alternator, you'll have to get in there anyway. Be ready to clean the grime and what-all off the bottom of the engine front.

Good Luck,

Bob
