Is the inline 6 in an early 960 the same inline 6 that is in the newer S series? I've got a 90's model 960 with a bad engine, and there's a high HP engine on eBay for $500, from an S60, will it fit?

    They are very different beasts.

In short, your 960 has the 3.0 liter "whiteblock" engine. The newer engines from the S60 and others are either a 3.2 liter normally aspirated or 3.0 liter turbo and are of a comepletely different design.

The new engines, instead of running all the accessories off the front, they have what Mother Volvo called the rear accessory drive (READ) system. It's a gear driven arrangement for the alternator, PS and AC compressor. This was done to shorten the length of the engine's footprint to better fit into FWD engine bays.

You need a "B6304" out of a '92-'97 960, '97-'98 S90, or '97-'98 V90. The camshafts changed in '95, so be aware of that and the wiring harnesses changed in '96 (that shouldn't matter for you). The '99-'05 S80 2.9 (non-turbo) used a version of this engine, but my understanding is that it has variable valve timing and may require a different computer, I'm not sure. Also, I'm not sure if the block is exactly the same, but it *may* work. What happened to your engine? Is it not repairable? The S60 has an inline 5, that will not work in your car without major modification.
