Will the factory original steel wheels for a 1992 240 mount (safely) on a 1991 740 (turbo, with ABS)? After a little searching online, I *believe* that the 240's wheels are 14" x 5", have a 5 x 108mm bolt pattern, and have a 20mm offset, while the 740 has 15" x 6" wheels that share the 240's bolt pattern, but have a 25mm offset. I haven't yet come across convincing data on these wheel specs, however.

I have winter tires mounted on factory original 240 steel rims that I would like to give to my father-in-law to mount on his 740.

A set of 14" Volvo wheels (from a 240 or a 740) will often fit the rest of the 740 lineup as long as the following is not equipped on the 740:
1. ABS brakes.
2. "Jumbo" rotor/caliper sets, which are often the same or similar rotors and calipers as used on the ABS cars, but without the function of anit-lock. -you'll have to test fit in this case to see if it will work.

Aside from these two circumstances, a 14" steel 240 wheel, or the various 14" aluminum wheels that were offered on the early 740s will fit the rest of the 740 lineup (with the smaller rotors/calipers and no ABS equipment). 14" will not clear a 740 with big brakes, or in your case, jumbo brakes. Most RWD Volvo rims 15" and larger will clear, except 140/160 (wrong shape), Virgos (240 turbo), and 95+ 960 (FWD offset).

Or put in other words, you're limited to ones that were on the 7/9-series.

While I would never deliberately mislead anyone, take into consideration that any info and advice was provided at no cost to you.

Alloys have pretty convincing data cast into the wheel hub. Steel should be stamped as I recall, have not seen steel wheels for ages. You might have trouble though with the 740 calipers fitting the steel 240 wheels.
