Spring seat replacement question

I am about to replace my squeaking spring seat, and a recent post gives me pause. A poster indicated he couldn't break the top nut loose on the strut. He mentioned that the strut would just spin despite using 18" and 24" bars (or some length). The solution turned out to be air impact tools (which I don't have).
I guess my question is, without having access to such a tool, should I dive right in? I have to loosen the same nut, right? Maybe try to break the nut loose first? I don't fully understand the original post - how did the poster stop the strut from spinning - a pipe wrench? When an impact wrench is used, does the need to hold the strut from spinning go away due to the way the wrench operates (quick burst of torque)?
Finally, other than care in using the spring compressor, and tidbits of advice are welcome. Thanks for any help. Don '95 854T
