Well among other things your seat is out of time. It has a memory in it that tells it where all the way forward and all the way back is. If the cable gets a little slack in it and it runs without actually moving the seat it is now out of time. What I would do is bump the seat all the way forward and then disconnect the cable, with the cable disconnected run it all the way backwards and then all the way forwards, now reconnect the cable and see if it runs all the way back and all the way forwards with no problems, it should.
I say just disconnect the cable but trust me it is not that easy. You have to do one of two things, either pull the seat cover off completely exposing the motor where it mounts on the upper seat frame so you can pull the cable loose there or you have to go in an cut the cable sheath and pull the cable out. Let's face it the seat got out of time because the cable needs to be fixed. To fix the cable you can either replace it or repair it. I worked on Volvo power seats in just about every capacity you can imagine but I also went to work for BMW for a couple of years and they have a different approach to fixing the same problems on their seats, they are all made by Brose. They cut the sheath in the middle, pull the cable, cut a little bit off of the end of the cut sheath (about 1/4") reinstall the cable in the sheath and then they use a piece of rubber fuel line and two hose clamps to but connect the hard plastic sheath back together. The trick is to get the sheath ends all the way into the fuel line and then to get the clamps tight enough to hold the whole thing together but not so tight that it keeps the cable from spinning. All the while you have to get the cable to pop in at both ends. It is a bit of a dance especially because some of this is going on up inside of the seat cover where you cannot see but I prefer doing them this way as opposed to replacing the cable. In replacing the cable you not only have to get it loose and the motor end you obviously have to get it loose at servo end as well or with it loose from one end you have to cut off the little metal piece on the end, cut the cable back a little and glue the metal end back on and drive it on with a hammer. This has the same effect as the whole "cut it in the middle and splice back together with fuel line" trick.
Sounds just like what you wanted to do with your day off huh?
Good Luck,
Mark
