2001 volvo s40 heating blower problem

Heating blower will not start regardless of control positions on A/C control panel on my 2001 Volvo s40. It worked on and off for a few weeks. Heating blower and its motor is OK - work fine when connected to 12V. Other controls seem to work fine (heat distribution,, etc..)
Any ideas?
Useful would be if someone has a wiring diagram, knows where to get a free manual or know where the rheostat or similar controlling unit is, etc...
