Service Engine Light 850 1996

See if the light has been removed by the previous owner. Look in your owner's manual at the Warning light page and varify where the CEL light is suppose to be, then turn the Key to the ON position where all the warning lights go through their TEST and see if the CEL light comes on. If it doesn't come ON during this test phase it may just be burned out (meaning the previous owner drove around with it ON for a very long time with some malfunction....), or the previous owner simply removed the bulb (again, not good....). You can put a drop-light behind the dash area and see if you see the spot where the bulb should be light up, meaning the bulb itself is gone and needs to be reinstalled. Maybe look in the glove compartment to see if whoever removed it did you the courtesy of simply leaving it in there for later re-installation, or you may have to run down to PepBoys or some other autoparts store and buy a new one. I think I would try those two test and see if the bulb is there or not. $90 isn't a bad price to pay for this job, its a pain in the ass. You have to remove the top of the dash panel to get to the bolts to remove the instrument cluster to do the installation. It will take you 3 or 4 hours at least, especially if you haven't done it before. I'll email you the chapter on the instrument cluster and see if you want to tackle it. Good luck.
