turn key to start.....nothing happens 850 1994

Car was running fine. stopped at office for a couple minutes. went out to start the car made a brief attempt to run and stopped after that, nothing....no selenoid click....starter motor did not attempt to turn engine...just dead...noted abnormal sound of the open door chime...all instrument panel lights on...tried working the shift selector back and forth, tried jumper cables...suggestion on where to begin?
