I have a 99 T5, so yours might be different- follow the air intake hose coming out of the airbox. There should be a hard plastic sensor on there that says "Bosch" somewhere on it. I think the only way to know if it's bad is to check the OBDII codes.

For more clarity, Eastern Aerospace has a post on their site about removing the MAF screen and they have pic's of the MAF sensor there. Hope the pic's help, but don't be tempted to remove the MAF screen as they suggest- it's a very bad idea from what I understand.
