CEL light .... code P0171 S70

Hello all,
I have been getting a CEL for code P0171 for about 6 months now. I had the code pulled at Auto Zone and it stated that Fuel system bank one too lean. The parts salesperson said they thought it was the front oxygen sensor. The light was reset and it took about six weeks for it to reappear. I had it checked again and it was the same code. Now the light will come on and go back off without being reset ( every 300 miles). I don't have a problem replacing the sensor, although I have heard it could be a number of things prompting this code. I don't want to buy a $175.00 oxy sensor if it is not the problem. If anyone has had this simular problem I would like to know what resolved it. Thanks in advance.
