In my opinion, you do not need to replace a compressor if it is capable of creating the proper pressure and is not leaking. Cutting in and out is caused by something else, such as low refrigerant charge, bad pressure switches, bad superheat switch, bad relay, or bad compressor clutch. If you are replacing the clutch, you MAY want to replace the compressor just due to it's age, IF it is not going to cost a lot more, but in the case of a Volvo, it WILL cost a lot more. The superheat switch cannot be replaced without replacing the compressor, but it can be easily unplugged and eliminated.
