What is the correct way to bleed the braked help 850

I am a brake job on my V40 on my rear brake.. I am accidently remove (disconnect the fluid line ) to make the job easy... brake fluid is every where..

I am install all 2 new rear brake now..

by the time I get done the fluide master is all empty..

Now here is my question when you pump the brake palde .. DO the engine need to be runing ????

without the engine runing the braked pump up and I feel the pressure..

but when I turn on the motor the braked go down to the floor..

this lead me to believe you must bleed the brake with the engine runing.

!!>. Here is what I have done top up the fluid and bleed the 2 front brake then I check the fluid master see if it low on fluid. (yes it is so I opend it up and top it up .. but my question do I suppost to opend up the master and fill it up don't this let more air back in..???

I spend all afternoon bleeding all 4 brakes... the one that I remove the line have all the air shooting out.. now every thing seem to be fine

What do I need to check to making sure the brake is safe for the lady to drive .. thank all your input.
