Rough idle & check engine light 850 1997

I agree that it's probably a vaccum leak or O2 sensor since it happened so quickly.

If you find that's not the case, always try checking the condition of the spark plugs/distributor cap (also, if you combine this with a fuel system that needs to be cleaned/fuel filter that needs to be replaced you get a very rough idle...but normally wouldn';t be quite like your symptoms).
