check engine light 850 1993

My "check engine" light has been on for a couple of weeks. Now the Service light pops on for a few minutes and goes away when starting up. I have also sense smelling some exhaust. My question is: is there a proper procedure one goes through to determine the cause of the check engine? Is this where the diagnostic system is put into action? I've never used it before. thanks
