Front O2 Sensor> 850 1994

Just got a '94 850t 3 weeks ago. I put a K&N air filter in 2 weeks ago and 4 days ago I was accelerating up a hill to 65 mph and the yellow check engine light came on. I took it to a mechanic and he told me that the front O2 sensor was shot. What effect does the O2 sensor have on the engine? Do I need to put $350 into my car right now or can I wait a pay period you know. . . just bought it. If I am debating on getting an aftermarket exhaust system do I put this off and put the money towards higher performance. I also read in the Bb archives something about 850's experiencing the illumination of the "Check Engine" and relating it to the Filter. Any ideas or advice? Thanks.
