Poor running until the Lambda sond kicks in 400

Does indeed sound like an air leak behind the throttle body. May be difficult to find if it's (for instance) the gasket between the cylinder head and the intake manifold.

Once the lambda sensor warms up can the engine compensate by adding more fuel, but that's not really what you want..

Did you try reading the codes from the ECU using the LED box mounted on the strut tower?
