An alignment proceedure in itself does not adjust vehicle height so if your car is not at the right height, someone who knows the car in detail must carefully examine it to see why it's not sitting correctly and that might require the use of a frame shop to check the "frame" (unibody) itself. If you're going by distance from tire to fender, that's not how its measured, it's measured from ground (actually bottom of wheel to eliminate tires) to lower fender edge and front and back are not the same either. Volvo says about 1/2" side to side difference is normal.
If there's a problem with tires and or wheels, they first need to be replaced then I'd suggest a good 4 wheel alignment to make sure it's aligned corectly if you have doubts.
As for any dash lights like ABS, SRS and Check engine.....a scan tool must first read the codes, then clear them first and then IF the lights fail to reset, a code (IE problem(s)) still exist and the tech must diagnose whatever fault codes are then present. There's no easy way around this.
The service light just means that a "suggested" service is due, depending on time/mileage and the light gets reset also by a scan tool in '98.
