davidm,
Don't confuse your TRACS with DSTC (Dynamic Stability Traction Control) or STC (Stability Traction Control) both offered on newer models. Your TRACS is simply to help you get started on ice or any other slippery surface, period. That's why it shuts down after 40km/hr (25mph). By taking advantage of the ABS which is already on your car, the engineers use the same sensors to sense when a front wheel starts to spin, at which time the ABS pumps the brakes to prevent it to spin further. Your experience the other night had nothing to do with having TRACS, but was the result of your own control over the car.
