If an insurance claim is involved, isn't a police report necessary?

VERY BRIEFLY: I phoned and faxed a claim to the insurance company of the party who hit my car. No police report. 100% their fault.
The check was in my hand the next day.

My uncle, who was a learned, successful businessman, scolded me for not getting a police report. He said it was unbelievable good luck the company paid.
