Your symptoms sound similar to what I experienced in my '01 years ago.
For me it was one bad of two coils.

This is not a recommendation to start throwing parts at it, but maybe you can swap coils with someone who has known good ones.

I have no idea how your engine is different from the 1.9L 4-cylinder in mine, but thought I'd share.
