As for a dead battery, hmmm. You could supply 12V to the red battery post in the engine bay and then open the lift gate.
My 1998 V70 had a keyhole in the lift gate, but after a lot of years of never being used, the lock cylinder corroded to the point where the key wouldn't turn and a new lock would have been required.
I hate Volvo cost cutters, they opted for a single key hole in the driver's side door handle back in 1998. Fine, until the remote stops working - then put the child carrier on the ground or tell the children to not move while you go around the car and unlock the doors! Volvo USA ignored my emails...
