2004 XC70 113k miles possible purchase V70-XC70 2004

A co-worker has a beautiful 2004 xc that I am interested in but I just learned the transmission acts up especially after getting warm in city traffic. During highway driving it shifts fine. She just told me she has been driving it like this for 6 months and it hasn't gotten worse. I am going to assume replacing the tranny is the only true fix but my question is will the newer (2005 etc) transmissions work in this year model? My understanding is 2005 and up the trannys are more reliable. Any input is appreciated.
