Turns out that the spring is really just a little diaphram. Went to several local electronics shops adn they just looked at it and kind of laughed although one said htat if I could locate the switch he could replace it for me.

I ended up getting a used radio from ebay for $30 including shipping and swapped the boards. So far so good nad only time will tell.
