After watching a couple of Youtube segments with the same problem, I wanted to share your fix with others.

I also emailed Volvo in NJ and got the following response:

There are numerous problems with the 2004 XC90, but someone on the Brickboard.com fixed his. The dealer tried and failed. The CEM over heats and causes the lights to go out and put the car in failure mode. A real problem.
