Klaus:

Noise seems to be from RH (pass.) side of engine compartment. Bought stethoscope (sp?)but couldn't isolate noise. Had three very experienced Volvo service guys listen, and they couldn't identify the noise either. (This was after they replaced the serp. belt idler, which had no effect on the noise.) The belt, tensioner, and idler have been replaced with no improvement. Alternator and p/s pump seem to turn smoothly by hand. Auto trans and all other fluids are full, and synthetic.

Don't know about the motor mounts, but top mount has been replaced, and there are no symptoms of soft mounts.

I read some of the posts about using only OEM oil filters, but they only apply to models with the filter upside down, correct?

This has been going on for three years. But, I just discovered that turning CCW makes the noise disappear. Very strange!!
