i had similar symptoms in my 2000 S80. I had reshimmed the clutch, and still had the issue. I ordered a reman on eBay, but before I went about opening the system, flushing, etc, I noticed the one I purchased had bypassed the thermal switch at the back of the compressor. I did the same with the original and voila, has worked flawlessly over a year now. I recommend either replacing that thermal switch on the back or cut the two wires going into it and solder them together and insulate. also make sure the one wire connector/fuse to the clutch clipped on the housing is making good contact.
