Either the lock rod is binding inside the door as John suggested, or the lock button is binding in the bushing going through the door panel. There is a tech net note addressing this problem and modifying the bushing will correct the problem. Should be a warranty repair. Till you get it fixed, the key will override this condition and lock the door.
