How to tell if mileage is correct V70-XC70 2001

A friend is looking at an 99 S70 and is suspicious of the odometer reading. Is there a way to alter or otherwise disconnect the odometer so that the actual mileage is different than what the odometer says? If so is there a way to tell if the odometer has been altered or disconnected?
