Sounds like the immobilizer didn't de-activate. Do you have other keys or keycards on the same keyring as your Volvo key?

They may interfere with the transponder in the Volvo key and the car won't receive a good unlock sequence and refuses to start.

Sometimes the antenna ring around the ignition lock goes bad. We have had these immobilizers in all cars for 5+ year now here in europe and that's a pretty 'normal' failiure mode.
