1998 V70 T5 engine backfires then stalls V70-XC70 1998

The engine suddenly stalled while I was accelerating to merge into traffic. When I tried to restart the engine, it idled roughly, backfired and stalled again after about 1-2 seconds. No codes were set and disconnecting the MAF sensor made no difference. The fuel filter and timing belt were replaced about 20,000 miles ago. Car has 170,000 now. Has anyone had a similar problem and can suggest a potential solution? Thanks.
