SRS, Clock Spring issue 850 94

I have had the same numerous problems with my 850 Turbo wagon as others have had. Here's the latest, and I need some advice as to how to proceed. Recently the SRS light came on and would not go off. I had it reset and it immediately came back on again. The mechanic thinks that it's the clock spring (the circuit in the steering column) that needs to stay in contact when the steering wheel turns. It does not, and the code shows "open circuit." What I've been told needs to be done is to take the steering column apart and see where the short is. 99% of the time the clock spring has to be replaced at about $160 for the part from Volvo and about an hour or 2 of labor. That's as much as $300 total. I checked with the dealer and there is a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty on the Supplemental Restraining System (SRS) since the time of first sale of the car. My car has just gone over that mark by a few months and so it's out of warranty. Has anyone else had problems with the same issue as me? If so, what have you done? Have you gone ahead and bitten the bullet again for yet another repair? As long as the SRS light stays on, if I or my wife are in an accident the airbag won't engage. Seems that this item should be a lifetime warrantied item. I know that other car manafacturers have the lifetime warranty on their airbag system due to the serious safety issues on line. Anyway, any information would be appreciated.
