Looks like I should have been more clear about what I did.
I covered the big black box-o-electronics with a plastic bag. I then sprayed the whole engine down with the Griot's engine cleaner. After it soaked for a bit, I used a shower style flower watering head on my hose to rinse it down. Very low pressure, but lots of volume. I agree that you should never use a high-pressure water stream on your engine, and you should cover the obvious electronics with plastic bags or something. This was to remove the light covering of grease/oil that comes from the factory, and then I coated everthing with Griot's Engine Gloss. This should allow me to keep the bay looking brand new with a light wash every 3-4 months or so.
