To translate your codes you need to invest in a Pocket Data Handbook sold by 1-800-25-VOLVO. It lists ALL the codes including every specification for your car that you would every need. Secondly, the "check engine" lamp should never be ignored and is related to any fault that would effect the emmisions of the car. There are some half dozen obscure transmission faults that can also trigger the lamp, arguably, effecting the emissions.
You may be confusing the "check engine" lamp with the "service" lamp. The "service" lamp is nothing more than a reminder lamp that comes on at regular intervals, reminding you that it is time for service. What exactly the service is, can be anything!
