How do I check engine codes? 850 94

I have the "Check Engine" light on and I've been trying to see what the code is, but I've been having trouble. I turn off the car, put the test lead into hole #6 in bank A, start the engine up, press the button for 1 second (the led lights when I press the button) and then nothing happens. The same thing happens when I try to test faults with the climate control. I don't know if the other holes don't work. What should I do? Is something big broken?
