It was random when I first got the car, now I can link it to my ignition, but I'm confused about replacement. When I first start the car, I turn the key to the number 2 position, most electronics boot up. Then I push the key into position 3 to crank the engine. As soon as I hear it catch, I simply let go of the key and it springs back to position 2. Sometimes, when doing this, I found my head lights and turn signals wouldn't work at all. However, if I grab the key after the car is running and gently nudge it back further into position 2, the headlights come back!
I'm imagining that the key isn't springing entirely back into position 2 after the car starts, and somehow I'm getting a bad connection to just those components. Once I nudge the key, it always works.
I'm nervous about taking apart the steering column and ignition switch, but am I on the right track? Would the replacement ignition found here:
