Klaus:
I have used the battery disconnect method on several cars with no ill effects that I could see. The '01 does not seem to have a radio code, and the book has a procedure for replacing the battery. No mention of radio code, and there are no numbered buttons to push anyway.

The intentional gas cap problem suggestion was only to establish if it was the cap or not. I have done a number of drive cycles with no change. My previous '98 S70 never reset the gas cap light at all, and there were several opportunities.
