hard to start white smoke/ temp circuit failure S70 1998

You are correct, the Engine Coolant Temp sensor needs to be replaced. The fuel injection uses this info to determine amount of fuel to deliver.
The white smoke is a concern, but fix one thing at a time.
I would suggest you find an 87C/89C thermostat and replace it at the same time. Dealers only carry the hotter one.
