Transmission Clunking Cont. - What is a Speed Sensor? 850

Alright, I'm starting to get a general idea of the possibilities, and I'm so glad you guys are helping me. My question is - what is a speed sensor? I've looked this part up and have found something called "ABS Speed Sensor". Is this what you're talking about? It's about $100 - and I would be willing to have it replaced if I can get a little bit more information as to what it does, and how it is causing my transmission clunking.
