I think you'd better disconnect the shaft from the transmission (which was the easiest step of my last job.). It will be very difficult for you to remove the CV joint from the shaft if you leave the axle connected to the transmission. after the two bolts holding the shaft to the frame, it can be removed from the transmission fairly easily with a little pull. My 850 is 95.
