Intermittently blinking 'AC/Off' switch and engine bay noise 850

Here is a tough new one for me.
1997 855 with 75,000 miles has 2 separate problems-may not be related.

1.) The AC/Off switch, located at lower right of control panel, has a light that begins a 1 second cycle of turning on..., and then off again. Unpredictable and intermittent.
2.) There is an underhood noise similar to roller skate wheels on a dirty roller rink. No grinding squeeling sounds.

Any suggestions? How do I isolate and check each under-hood component for shaft bearing wear?.
Does the OBD-2 have Air Conditioning trouble codes for this?

Auto temp controls are doing the job. AC compressor cycles at normal rate, AC clutch engage/disengages smoothly. Serpentine and timing belt done at 62,000 miles. R-134 freon was recharged 6 monthes ago-solved a prior temp output problem.

What does a failing tensioner bearing sound like?
Help,
