HELP! SURGING MOTOR 850 1993

Hello:

Driving home from work yesterday, stopped at a light, the tachometer (I think that's what it's called) started to bounce from 1 to below and the motor started to surge in conjunction. In order to prevent a complete stall (dashboard lights flickered as if car was going to stall) I kept the gas pedal down a bit to rev the motor. When the light turned green I put the car into first gear (manual transmission) and accelerated. The tach went up to three but stayed there when I shifted to second gear like I was still holding down the accelerator while the car was in neutral. This continued the entire way--it's as if the car is gasping for breath. I had a 90k service, just had timing belt and serp. replaced, had an oil change 1000k ago. . .I made it to the shop and the car is there now. I am wondering what to expect when they call me later on today. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance. . .
