Strange Engine problem (ignore other post)

I have a 1998 S70 T5 and as of several days ago, the engine has started having this strange problem. The engine refuses to go higher than 4000 rpm. If I force it past 4000 rpm, the engine sounds kind of like its weezing and produces almost no power. It seems almost as though there were a rev limiter at 4000 rpm. I can't figure out at all what this is.
After this happens, the Check Engine light blinks and then stays on. Under 4000 rpm, the car functions normally. Thank you in advance!
