Rattle in the rear, help! 850 1996

Here a good one: while going over even the slightest uneven road (California city streets), at a very low speed (5 mph) I hear a distinct rattle coming from the rear of my car. At first it sounded like something rattling around in the trunk, but taking everything out of the trunk, including the spare, did not solve it. I *think* that it was the right rear, and when poking around back there I did notice that there was some small amount of play in the right truk strut, whereas there was no play in the left strut. Could this be the source of it? If not, could it be something in the suspension. Ideas, anyone?

The sound, by the way, is sort of a hollow popping sound. That's about as well as I can describe it.
