Short circuit in instrument lights, where to start? V70-XC70 1999

There is a micro switch in the door lock assembly, not accessible. The wiring is usually at fault, check around the hinge between the door and frame.

I assume the PO removed the relay for the door chime. It is located above the brake pedal - blue.

Sometimes a shot of lubricant into the door switch can reverse the problem. Look closely at the door latch mechanism, at the bottom of the latch is a small metal piece that can be moved outwards by hand. That can get dirty and cause the switch to not move properly. Use the outside door handle to release the switch before closing the door
