Compressor and strange light and blinker issue 850 1996

Help? I just needed a new battery and my mechanic told me my compressor is broken and that my car will soon stop running because of this. Does this make sense?
Also off and on when I start the engine the shift doesn't come out of park and the lights and signal blinkers don't work either. The car will go if I press the shiftlock overdrive switch, but I have discovered that simply turning off and on the engine once or twice fixes the issues. ?
